Belly Ring Sizes
How to find the right fit for you!
Getting a comfortable fit for your belly rings takes a little effort, but is not impossible. The hardest part is figuring out what barbell length you need. There is no standard way to pierce a navel and every Piercing Professional pierces a little differently. Some take a small amount of skin for the piercing, which means you will need a shorter barbell length. Some take more skin and pierce farther back than others. This means you will need a longer length barbell.
For a long time most piercings came out around 7/16" (11mm). That is why belly rings sold in most stores are 7/16" long. In recent years, navel piercings have become more shallow (closer to the front), using less skin. Some stores started carrying barbell lengths in 3/8" (10mm). We have found the many Piercing Professionals do not educate their customers on the gauge or length of their piercing. With the initial piercing, most piercers use a 14 gauge, 1/2" long barbell or 14 gauge 1/2" captive ring. These longer sizes are used so the jewelry can be moved so the piercing can be cleaned properly. If you were pierced several years ago, it's possible that you have a 16 gauge piercing, which is a little thinner than 14 gauge. If you are not sure what gauge you are, you can follow the steps below.
Many people find that after their navel piercing heals, the barbell sticks out of the piercing and doesn't look very good. It can also poke you and catch on clothing. Of course, most people want to change their plain barbell or ring as soon as possible. We recommend that you always follow the advice that was given by the piercer. Changing your barbell too soon can cause infection and/or rejection. Most belly rings you buy at a store have not been sterilized (autoclaved).
So how do you figure out what size belly ring you need?
- The easiest way is to call your piercer and find out what gauge and barbell length or ring diameter they pierced you with. If you like the way your belly ring fits, then you are set. Go to BodySparkle Belly Rings to find belly in that size. If you don't like the way your belly ring fits, use the measuring chart to estimate what size you would like.
- Print our measuring chart and measure the jewelry you have. We have created a free measuring chart that you can print and use to measure your belly ring. With this chart you can measure the length of your barbells, the gauge (thickness of the part that goes through your piercing) and the size of the end balls. Once you determine what size jewelry you have, and if you like the way your belly ring fits, then you are set. Go to BodySparkle Body Jewelry to find belly rings in that size. If you don't like the way your belly ring fits, use the measuring chart to estimate what size you would like.

- Measure your navel piercing with a ruler. We have found that if you measure the length from the top of your navel to the hole of your piercing, that is generally the size you need (depending on how deep your piercing is. You may want to add a millimeter or two to be safe. Click here for info on How to Measure Your Belly Ring Piercing
