Body Jewelry Cleaning Instructions
Tarnished Jewelry
Many people don't realize that a lot of body jewelry, especially belly button rings and nose rings have sterling silver or silver plated settings. The silver settings will discolor over time, turning a yellowish brown, then black color. This is caused by exposure to oxygen. A good way to slow the tarnishing process is to store your sterling silver or silver plated jewelry in airtight, zip close bags.
If your sterling silver or 14K gold jewelry is already tarnished, it can be cleaned with jewelry cleaner that can be purchased at any department store or jewelry store. There are different types of cleaner for sterling silver and 14K gold. Just be sure to get jewelry cleaner that is made to clean the type of jewelry you have and you will be amazed at the transformation. Your jewelry will look brand new again!
Be sure to read and follow all of the instructions on the cleaner. Clean, rinse and dry the piece thoroughly before re-inserting in your piercing. Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to avoid scratching the metal or the stones.
Have the stones in your body jewelry lost their sparkle? Exposure to soap and lotions, etc. will cause the stones to cloud up and lose their sparkle. The stones can also be cleaned, but be sure to check the information on the cleaner to be sure it is safe for that type of stone. Limit the stone's exposure to silver cleaners - cleaners may harm certain kinds of synthetic or real gem stones.
Do not use jewelry cleaner on pearls and porous stones, such as emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, coral and turquoise. Wipe them clean with a soft, damp cloth or have them cleaned professionally. Consult a jeweler when in doubt about a particular stone.
Exposure to perfume, cosmetics or perspiration can stain gemstones.
If you are still unsure of cleaning your silver, gold or gemstone items ask your local jeweler to clean them or to advise you of the proper method.
