Captive Ring Instructions and Information

Captive Rings can be tricky. Many people have trouble getting the ball in and out until they learn the trick which usually takes some practice.

The ball is held in the ring the pressure of the ring snapping into the two small dimples (one on each side of the ball). The ball does not screw in. The ball will only pop out of the ring when the ring is opened slightly.

To change Captive Ring, hold the ring on each side of the bead, and pull it apart just a little. The bead should fall out. Then (still holding it the same way), twist the ring. In other words, turn your right hand clockwise, and your left hand counter clockwise. That will make it more like a spiral so that you can take it out, our put it in. The bead is just held in by tension, nothing else. There is a small dimple on each side of the ball that the ring will click in to. It is easier with the thinner gauge captive rings. Once you get into the 14 gauge and thicker, opening the ring by hand is harder.

It does take a little practice. One thing that will make working with these rings easier is Captive Ring Opening/Closing Pliers. You just need to be careful not to stretch the ring open too far. Here is a link to the pliers that we carry:
