Body Jewelry Cleaning and Care Information

Do not wear your Sterling Silver or Silver Plated items in swimming pools or hot tubs. The chlorine can damage the finish on these pieces!

Tarnished Jewelry
Many people don't realize that a lot of body jewelry has silver plated or sterling silver parts. All the body jewelry we sell has 316L Surgical Stainless Steel Barbells, unless designated as titanium, 14K gold, PTFE or BioFlex (bioplastic). Many belly button rings have 316L surgical stainless steel or titanium barbells, but the dangles or stone settings can be silver plated base metal or .925 Sterling Silver. Many of our nose rings and nose hoops are made of Sterling Silver. The detail of the materials in each product are listed in the product descriptions. Please read them carefully so you understand exactly what you are purchasing

Most silver plated or or sterling silver items will discolor over time, turning a yellowish brown, then black color. This is called tarnish and it is caused by exposure to oxygen. A good way to slow the tarnishing process is to store your sterling silver or silver plated jewelry in airtight, zip close bags. 14K gold generally does not tarnish, but can become slightly discolored over time when exposed to oxygen.

If your silver plated, sterling silver or 14K gold jewelry is starting to tarnish or is already tarnished, it can usually be cleaned with jewelry cleaner that can be purchased at any department store or jewelry store. There are different types of cleaner for sterling silver and 14K gold. Just be sure to get jewelry cleaner that is made to clean the type of jewelry you have and you will be amazed at the transformation. Your jewelry will look brand new again! Consult a professional jeweler for the proper way to clean your piece of jewelry. If you clean a silver plated piece with the incorrect cleaner, it may take the silver finish off, leaving the piece dull.

We recommend cleaning your jewelry often with the correct jewelry cleaner and keeping it in zip close bags when not in use. Once the tarnish sits on the piece for a long period of time, it may not come off. The tarnish actually eats into the surface of the piece.

Be sure to read and follow all of the instructions on the cleaner. Clean, rinse and dry the piece thoroughly before re-inserting in your piercing. Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to avoid scratching the metal or the stones. Store only completely dry jewelry in zip close bags.

Dull Stones
Have the stones in your body jewelry lost their sparkle? Exposure to soap and lotions, etc. will cause the stones to cloud up and lose their sparkle. The stones can also be cleaned with jewelry cleaner that can be purchased at most local department stores, jewelry stores or drug stores. Be sure to check the information on the cleaner to be sure it is safe for that type of stone. Be careful when exposing stones to silver jewelry cleaners. Certain silver jewelry cleaners may harm some synthetic or real gem stones.

Do not use jewelry cleaner on pearls and porous stones, such as emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, coral and turquoise. Wipe them clean with a soft, damp cloth or have them cleaned professionally. Consult a professional jeweler about how to clean your particular piece of jewelry.

Exposure to chlorine (swimming pools and hot tubs), perfume, cosmetics or perspiration can stain gemstones, silver plated and sterling silver jewelry.

If you are still unsure of cleaning your silver, gold or gemstone items ask your local professional jeweler to clean them or to advise you of the proper method.

Acrylic/Plastic/PTFE/BioFlex
All of the above materials will crack or dissolved when exposed to alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. You can use anti-bacterial soap to clean any item that contains Acrylic/Plastic, PTFE or BioFlex material.
